This Korean drama is peculiar. It begins with a premise that serves as the protagonists’ driving force, but what ultimately develops is the tale of their journey and the people they encounter along the way. How the people affect and transform one another along the way is less important than the alien abduction. The two main characters have good chemistry, and as usual, a goofy cast of side characters adds comic relief. The tone is intriguing because it can be playful at moments and extremely dark at others. Worthwhile, and if there is a second season, I would watch it.

The Glory

A high school student dreamed of one day working as an architect. She became a victim of high school violence perpetrated by her fellow students. She dropped out of high school because of the bullying. She then planned revenge on her tormentors and also the bystanders who did nothing.

Bullying in high school is a theme that appears in the majority of Korean dramas. I wonder if the topic is deeply ingrained in the culture because it appears so frequently, but it’s possible that they are more willing to address issues in ways that American media will not.

The abuse itself is less the focus of this tale than is vengeance. The main character meticulously plans her revenge for decades against her tormentors, who have all turned into miserable adults in their own right. Because her targets are so incredibly awful, her actions never appear unjustified. Only those who are close to her abusers earn any sympathy.

Part 2 begins on Netflix in March 2023.
